Choosing Fast Power Wheels
When choosing fast Power Wheels you have to figure out how fast you want to go.
Speed
Up to 3 MPH
This pricing bracket includes the vast majority of vehicles, whether they are very inexpensive or loaded with optional extras. We recommend children’s electric automobiles controlled by parental remotes for this age group.
3.1-5 MPH
The majority of the 12-volt Power Wheels with more than one speed can be found here. If and when the kid is ready, you can increase the car’s speed. Most Power Wheels top out at 5 miles per hour, so if you want to go faster you’ll either need a different type of vehicle or be willing to pay a lot more.
5+ MPH
Power Wheels, ATVs, and Power Wheels motorcycles that can reach speeds of above 5 miles per hour tend to be prohibitively expensive. Depending on the primary item you select, speeds may vary. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive list of the aforementioned resources, as well as links to in-depth information on each topic.
The Power Wheels motorcycles are usually the fastest because you have less of a vehicle to add weight and a lot of these run with 24V batteries.
Battery
Keep in mind going faster means the battery will deplete quicker, and the run time of the vehicles will be around 40-60 minutes.
There are Power Wheels batteries that last longer than you can purchase, but make sure they will fit the vehicle you are purchasing.
When it comes to the battery, you also want to keep an eye on the aH, not just the voltage. This is how much room the battery has to hold electricity. A higher aH means the vehicle will run longer.
You can think of the voltage as the pressure the electrons are being pushed, if you are looking for a fast vehicle 24V and up is recommended.
Motors
A motor is inside the Power Wheels, and it is what makes a wheel spin. Having 2 motors will make the kid’s car 2-wheel drive. If it has 4 motors, then it would be 4-wheel drive.
Wattage
The wattage of the motor will let you know how powerful and fast the wheel spins. The higher wattage will mean more speed and more traction, though it will come at the cost of using more battery.
If you want to calculate how long a battery will last, I have a calculator for that.
Tires
The tires on an automobile are essential for traction. If you’re going fast, the kid’s automobile won’t jiggle as much. Most vehicles of this type will have the capability to climb steep inclines and even go off-road.
Safety
It’s important to stay safe with ride-on cars and we always recommend seatbelts but oddly enough, as you move up and go faster on the ATVs and motorcycles, they usually don’t offer them.
Weight
The child’s weight shouldn’t be too close to the limit. If a kid’s weight is close to or over the maximum, the battery will have to work significantly harder.
This could lead to either a shorter battery life or a lower performance level than advertised.
I normally advise getting a weight limit that is at least 30 pounds higher than the youngster to give the child a sufficient amount of time before he outgrows it. Perhaps 40 lbs. if your youngster is growing like a weed.
Extra Speed
There is typically not a lot of room for customization in these automobiles. These kids’ cars are typically reaching their limits, but you might be able to find an alternate battery that can aid enhance the speed.
By replacing heavy lead-acid batteries with lighter and more powerful lithium-ion cells, a drill battery conversion can greatly increase the speed of a standard vehicle, such as a Power Wheels Jeep.
There are additional things you’ll want to do as well, but the total cost will be far less than if you bought a new, more powerful Power Wheels set.
Balance
Let’s get going if you’re ready for a quicker Power Wheels, but before you get your youngster a Power Wheels Motorcycle, make sure they know how to ride a regular bike.
If you’re not sure, you could always opt for a Power Wheels 4×4 ATV. You won’t have to keep your balance with these four-wheelers, and they’re great for traversing a wide variety of terrains.
