Best Electric Go-Karts for Kids: 7 Picks by Age and Speed

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. How we pick

For a kid aged 6 to 12 who has outgrown a 5 mph Power Wheels, get a 24V drift kart with a brake pedal and a low-speed setting. My pick is the Blitzshark 24V, the kart my readers bought most last year. For a 6-year-old’s first kart, look at the Razor Crazy Cart Shift, and for a grassy yard, the Razor Dune Buggy.

Want speed from something other than a kart? My fastest Power Wheels list mixes karts with quads and dirt bikes, and my 36V ride-on list has more 36V karts for bigger kids.

On this page

How to Choose an Electric Go-Kart for Your Kid

I have two boys, and they drive our own ride-ons in the backyard. Our Razor 24V Dirt Quad is still going strong after more than four years. We don’t own any of these karts, though, so I picked them from the listings, the manuals and the specs, not from our driveway.

Drift kart, Crazy Cart or classic kart

A drift kart (Blitzshark, Aosom, FORESEE, Sopbost) has a gas pedal and a drift mode or drift wheels that let the back end slide on smooth pavement. The Crazy Cart Shift drives its front wheel and rides on rear casters, so it spins at low speed. The Ground Force One is a classic low kart, and the Dune Buggy is an off-road buggy.

Age, weight and room to grow

The youngest starting age here is 6 (Blitzshark, FORESEE, Sopbost, and the Crazy Cart Shift on its low setting). The Aosom and both Razor 24V karts start at 8.

Weight limits run from 110 lb on the Blitzshark to 220 lb on the Sopbost 36V, for one rider. For a growing kid, the FORESEE frame extends from 38.6 to 50 inches, the Blitzshark adjusts to three lengths, and the Aosom seat fits riders 35.4 to 59.1 inches tall.

Speed settings, because there’s no remote

A 12V Power Wheels tops out at about 5 mph (here’s how fast 12V Power Wheels go). These karts reach 7.5 to 12 mph, and none lists a parent remote, so the low setting is your control.

The Crazy Cart Shift has a hidden 2.5 mph setting, and the Blitzshark, Aosom, FORESEE and Sopbost have high/low switches. The two Razor 24V karts have a variable throttle and no low setting.

Brakes your kid understands

The Blitzshark, FORESEE and Sopbost have a separate brake pedal. The two Razor 24V karts have a hand-operated rear brake.

The Crazy Cart Shift has no traditional brake, and Razor’s manual says you stop it with the pedal and the steering. Aosom’s listing doesn’t describe a brake. Whichever you get, practice stopping on the low setting first.

Tires decide where they can drive

Drift wheels and casters are made for smooth, dry pavement. Aosom names concrete, asphalt and brick, and Razor says the Ground Force is for flat, dry ground without sand, leaves, rocks or gravel. For grass and dirt, the only kart here built for it is the Dune Buggy, with 8-inch knobby air-filled tires and rear suspension.

Battery, run time and charging

Run times go from about 40 minutes (Aosom, both Razor 24V karts) to 1 to 2 hours (Blitzshark, per the seller). Razor’s manuals ask for a 12-hour first charge, so plan ahead for a birthday or Christmas morning.

Use the charger that came in the box, for the hours in the manual, and let an adult handle it. My charging guide has the details, and my replacement battery guide covers replacements.

The 7 Best Electric Go-Karts for Kids

1. Blitzshark 24V Kids Electric Drift Go-Kart

Ages 6–12Up to 110 lbBrake pedal2 speedsSeat belt

This is the kart my readers bought most last year, and it covers the whole 6 to 12 range. Two 150W motors run off a 24V 7Ah battery, and Blitzshark lists 4 to 7.5 mph with a high/low switch, plus sports and drift modes.

It drives like a real kart, with a gas pedal, a separate brake pedal and an adjustable seat belt. The length adjusts to three settings, the dash shows the charge left, and there’s a wireless music player. The wheels are EVA foam, and Blitzshark gives about 1 to 2 hours per charge.

The catch is the 110 lb limit, the lowest here, so a big 11- or 12-year-old may outgrow it. The listing also doesn’t give a charge time.

Verdict The one to get for a 6- to 10-year-old’s first real kart, with a brake pedal and a low setting to start on. For a kid already near 100 lb, the Aosom or the Sopbost 36V has more room.

Pros

  • A separate brake pedal and a seat belt.
  • High/low switch, listed at 4 to 7.5 mph.
  • Length adjusts to 3 settings.

Cons

  • 110 lb limit, the lowest here.
  • No charge time listed.
  • Specs come from the listing only.

2. Razor Crazy Cart Shift 12V Drift Kart

Ages 6+Up to 120 lb2.5 mph settingPavement

The Crazy Cart Shift is the gentlest start on this list. A switch inside the battery compartment, which takes a Phillips screwdriver to reach, caps it at 2.5 mph, and Razor rates it for 6 and up on that setting.

On high it does up to 8 mph, for ages 8 and up. Razor gives up to 80 minutes of riding on low and 40 on high.

A 90W hub motor turns the front wheel, the rear wheels are casters, and Razor’s drift system engages by itself, so kids spin and slide with both hands on the wheel. It weighs about 22 lb and takes up to 10 minutes to put together.

There’s no brake and no seat belt, so practice stopping on low first. And the manual’s weight limit is 120 lb, lower than the 150 lb on Razor’s product page. I’d go by the manual.

Verdict The pick for a 6- or 7-year-old’s first kart, or a kid who wants to spin more than race. Skip it for grass or for a kid over 120 lb.

Pros

  • Hidden 2.5 mph setting for beginners.
  • Up to 80 minutes on low.
  • About 22 lb and quick to build.

Cons

  • No brake and no seat belt.
  • Smooth pavement only.
  • Small for kids near 12.

3. Aosom 24V Electric Drift Go-Kart

Ages 8–12Up to 154 lb2 speedsSeat beltPavement

Aosom’s drift kart suits an 8- to 12-year-old who wants to learn real drifts on pavement. Two motors run off two 12V 7Ah batteries (24V), with a high/low switch for 3.7 or 8.1 mph and a soft start that eases it off the line.

The seat moves to two positions for riders 35.4 to 59.1 inches tall, and it holds up to 154 lb. It has a two-point belt and horn and music buttons on the wheel. Aosom says the PU front and PE rear drift wheels are for concrete, asphalt, brick and other smooth surfaces.

The run time is short at about 40 minutes, and the listing doesn’t describe a brake. Aosom’s manual says adult supervision is required and the belt must be worn, and warns that the kart isn’t suitable under 6 because of its top speed.

Verdict Pick it for a kid of 8 or older with a big paved area to drift on. For a 6-year-old, start with the Blitzshark or the Crazy Cart Shift.

Pros

  • 154 lb limit.
  • Two seat positions for riders up to 59.1 in tall.
  • Horn and music buttons on the wheel.

Cons

  • About 40 minutes per charge.
  • No brake described.
  • Hard drift wheels for smooth pavement only.

4. FORESEE Licensed BMW 24V Drift Go-Kart

Ages 6+Up to 132 lbBrake pedalLED lightsExtends to 50 in

For a kid who cares about the badge, this is a BMW-licensed drift kart. It has a 24V 5Ah battery and two motors that FORESEE lists at 400W in total, two speeds of 4.5 and 7.5 mph, and split gas and brake pedals with an electric brake.

The frame extends from 38.6 to 50 inches, the widest range listed on this page, and the seat is 15 by 8 inches. It has a 2-point harness, front and rear LED lights and nylon rear drift wheels, and FORESEE lists 60 to 90 minutes per charge.

The 5Ah battery is the smallest here, and the specs come from the listing alone. The same listing also sells a 36V version, so check that the one in your cart says 24V.

Verdict Get it for a BMW fan aged 6 to 10 who has a lot of growing to do. For a bigger battery, the Blitzshark has 7Ah.

Pros

  • Licensed BMW styling with LED lights.
  • Frame extends from 38.6 to 50 in.
  • Brake pedal and a 2-point harness.

Cons

  • 24V 5Ah, the smallest battery here.
  • Specs come from the listing only.
  • Check you’ve picked 24V, not the 36V version.

5. Sopbost 36V Electric Drift Go-Kart

Ages 6–12Up to 220 lbBrake pedal36VSeat belt

This is the kart for a big kid. Sopbost rates it for 220 lb, twice the Blitzshark, and it runs on 36V from two 18V 7Ah batteries, with two rear motors that Sopbost lists at 350W each.

Your kid gets a gas pedal and a brake pedal, a high/low switch, a seat belt and a 15-inch seat. Sopbost gives a top speed of 9.5 mph, the fastest of the drift karts here, and 60 to 120 minutes of riding, plus Bluetooth music and EVA tires.

Sopbost publishes only the top speed, not the low one, and says the kart has no remote. It recommends protective pads, and I’d add a helmet on every ride.

Verdict The pick for a 10- to 12-year-old or any kid over about 100 lb. Too quick to start a first-time 6-year-old on.

Pros

  • 220 lb limit, the highest here.
  • Brake pedal and a seat belt.
  • 60–120 minutes per charge, per Sopbost.

Cons

  • Low speed not published.
  • 9.5 mph on a kart rated from 6.
  • Sopbost doesn’t give a charge time.

6. Razor Ground Force One 24V Go-Kart

Ages 8+Up to 140 lbUp to 12 mphRubber tiresPavement

The Ground Force One is the fastest kart here at up to 12 mph, for a kid of 8 or older who has driven before. It’s a low, steel-framed kart with a 250W chain-driven motor, two 12V batteries (24V), a thumb-trigger throttle and a hand-operated rear brake.

It has solid rubber tires on aluminum wheels, a bucket seat with a lap belt, and a safety flag. Razor gives a 140 lb limit, up to 40 minutes of riding and up to 12 hours to charge. My Razor Ground Force review has more on it.

There’s no low-speed setting. The throttle is variable all the way to 12 mph, so your kid sets the speed with a thumb, and Razor says it’s for flat, dry surfaces.

Verdict Get it for a kid of 8 or older who wants real speed on flat pavement and can handle a hand brake. Not a first kart for a 6-year-old.

Pros

  • Up to 12 mph, the fastest here.
  • Hand brake and a lap belt.
  • Solid rubber tires on aluminum wheels.

Cons

  • No low-speed setting.
  • Up to 40 minutes per charge.
  • Flat, dry pavement only.

7. Razor Dune Buggy 24V

Ages 8+Up to 120 lbKnobby tiresRear suspensionGrass

The Dune Buggy is the one kart here built for grass and dirt, with 8-inch knobby air-filled tires, a rear shock and a side cage around the seat. The listing says it handles dirt, grass and gravel.

A 250W motor runs off two 12V 7Ah batteries (24V), with a thumb throttle up to 9 mph and a hand-operated rear disc brake. It has a lap and shoulder belt and a steel frame, arrives about 99 percent assembled, and runs up to 40 minutes per charge.

The limit is 120 lb, and air-filled tires need checking: Razor’s manual says to inflate them to the PSI printed on the sidewall. Like the Ground Force, it has no low-speed setting, and Razor rates it for 8 and up.

Verdict The kart to get if your yard is grass, not pavement, and your kid is 8 or older. For a kid over 120 lb, none of the karts here is made for grass.

Pros

  • Knobby air tires and rear suspension.
  • Hand disc brake and a side cage.
  • Arrives almost fully assembled.

Cons

  • 120 lb limit.
  • No low-speed setting.
  • Tires need air checks.

Go-Kart Safety: A Helmet on Every Ride

Safety first: A helmet on every ride, with the chin strap buckled. Razor’s manuals also recommend elbow pads, knee pads, long sleeves, long pants, gloves and lace-up shoes. Ride on private property or a closed course, never on streets or sidewalks, and stay away from driveways, pools, steps, steep hills and traffic. No riding at night or in the wet. One rider at a time, within the maker’s age and weight limits, with an adult watching. Start on the lowest speed setting, and save drifting for a wide open area with no curbs.

My safety gear guide covers helmets and pads for kids, and my ride-on safety guide has the rest.

Kids Go-Kart Questions

How fast does a kids electric go-kart go?

The karts here top out between 7.5 mph (Blitzshark, FORESEE) and 12 mph (Razor Ground Force One). Razor’s Ground Force Elite, rated for 13 and up, is listed at up to 14 mph.

What age can a kid drive an electric go-kart?

Most kids’ karts start at 6 or 8, and four of the seven here start at 6. Go by the maker’s age, not just your kid’s size: Razor says its age recommendations reflect maturity and skills as well as physical size.

What’s the weight limit on a kids go-kart?

From 110 lb (Blitzshark) to 220 lb (Sopbost 36V) on this list. Each limit is for one rider, and Razor’s manuals say never to carry a passenger.

Can a Crazy Cart go on grass?

Razor’s manual says to pick a riding area that is level, smooth and dry, and the Shift’s rear wheels are urethane casters built for drifting. For grass, the Razor Dune Buggy has knobby air-filled tires and rear suspension.

Does my kid need a helmet for a go-kart?

Yes. Razor’s manuals say to always wear an approved helmet with the chin strap buckled, and a helmet may be required by law where you live.

My short version: for a 6- to 10-year-old, the Blitzshark 24V. For a first kart at 6, the Crazy Cart Shift on its low setting. For a kid over 100 lb, the Sopbost 36V. For real speed at 8 and up, the Ground Force One, and for a grassy yard, the Dune Buggy.
